Introduction of Unix Operating System
Do you know what is UNIX and what are its features. By the way, UNIX is also an operating system like Windows and Mac. If you have even a little knowledge of computer programming. Then you must have heard the name of C Programming Language. This language was created 40-45 years ago from today. Yet today it is one of the popular and most used programming languages.
But do you know that the C Programming Language was created for only one purpose and that was to develop the UNIX Operating System. So why did the developers of the UNIX Operating System want to develop it? What is special in this Operating System or what are its features. Let me tell you that so far many similar operating systems have been created by being inspired by Unix. Which is based on Unix Operating System.
That's why in this article we have tried to give complete information about UNIX Operating System. Such as what is the Unix Operating System, when the UNIX Operating System was created, the history of the UNIX Operating System and the characteristics of the Unix Operating System, etc. have been told.
what is Unix
UNIX is an influential and open source licensed software or operating system. In which many users and the facility to perform many tasks at the same time is available. That's why it is called Multiuser and Multitasking Operating System. This operating system was developed at Bell Laboratories. Which is also called Bell Labs in short.
It was developed by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and their fellow computer scientists in the year 1969. But its first version was released in the year 1971. Today almost many popular operating systems such as; Linux, Mac OS X, Android, iOS etc. are based on UNIX Operating System. Or it can be said that the UNIX Operating System is the mother of all these popular operating systems.
The UNIX Operating System was first written in Assembly and later in the C Programming Language. This is other operating system like; It is faster, safer, powerful and reliable than Windows etc. For this reason, this operating system can be used easily even in less space. It is also used in Workstations and Servers.
History of Unix
In the year 1969, Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and their fellow computer scientists at Bell Laboratories started a project to create an operating system. This project was named Multics at that time. Whose full name is Multi-Information Computing System. Then this operating system mostly supported two users.
This operating system was reformed again in the year 1970 under the name of new project in Bell Laboratories. This time the name of this new project was named Unix. Whose full name is Uniplexed Information Computing System. This Operating System was written in Assembly Language.
Ken Thompson also created a programming language to create this operating system. Which is called B Programming Language. B Programming Language was created in the year 1969 by improving the BCPL Programming Language. But there were some flaws in B Programming Language.
Due to which the operating system could not be created from it. But it was kept open source. Due to which Dennis Ritchie started modifying it and created C Programming Language in the year 1972. C Programming Language was a good programming language for UNIX. That's why the Unix Project was written again in 1973 in C Programming Language. Which was renamed to UNIX.
What is the feature of UNIX
Ken Thompson wanted to make an operating system. For this he also made a programming language. This proves that the UNIX operating system is special from other operating systems. Here you will know why the UNIX Operating System is special from other Operating Systems. i.e. what is the feature of UNIX.
- The UNIX Operating System was written in High Level Programming Language. So it is easy to understand and modify it.
- UNIX provides the facility of multi-user and multi-tasking.
- UNIX Operating System supports Command Line Functionality.
- GUI is also seen in UNIX like Windows Operating System.
- UNIX Operating System is available with Open Source License.
- The UNIX Operating System is the mother of many popular operating systems.
- UNIX Operating System is written in High Level Language.
- The Linux Operating System was born from the UNIX Operating System.
- Apart from Smartphone and Computer, UNIX Operating System is also used in Server and Supercomputer etc.
- UNIX is Fast and Secure Operating System.
